Veeder-Root TSN: Network Security Reminder

Veeder-Root Takes Network Security VERY Seriously!

OVERVIEW

Offering the best in class tools to prevent cyberattacks, Veeder-Root Veeder-Root TLS-450PLUSrecommends network ‘best practices’ such as:

  • Utilize separate network ports on the TLS-450PLUS ATG
  • Configure network routing tables
  • Changing network port numbers
  • Add a serial command security code to harden remote access and prevent un-authorized access to Veeder-Root ATG

TIP: Veeder-Root recommends that ASCs review and implement these ‘best practices’ for network security with their customers, when installing a new console or setting up a network port.

IMPORTANTCustomers on older TLS-350 ATG systems should consider either upgrading to the TLS-450PLUS or utilizing extra network firewall equipment.

TLS-450PLUS and TLS4 Series ATGs

The TLS-450PLUS and TLS4 Series ATGs come with security features allowing for greater protection and control of access to the ATG than legacy consoles. Features such as configurable user access and segmented network ports help ensure both network and front-panel security. To learn more about these features and how to set them up, please see our TLS4 Series Security Settings Technical Support Notice.

Veeder-Root TSN: iButton USB Adapters, TLS-450PLUS & TLS4 Series CPU Backup Battery

Veeder-Root CPU Battery BackupVeeder-Root iButton USB AdapterVEEDER-ROOT TECHNICAL SUPPORT NOTIFICATIONS

Veeder-Root iButton USB Adapters

Due to supply chain issues, Veeder-Root will be limiting the number of USB adapters they ship with iButton software upgrades for the TLS-4xx platform.  Until supply chain issues have been resolved, individual iButtons will need to be swapped in and out of the USB adapters manually in order to upgrade TLS-4xx consoles with software enhancements.

Get all the details by viewing the Veeder-Root iButton TSN here.

TLS-450PLUS & TLS4 Series CPU Backup Battery

Once again, due to supply chain issues, the CPU battery backup on all TLS-450PLUS and TLS4 Series Automatic Tank Gauges (ATGs) has been changed. The previous ML2430 has been replaced with the ML2032 battery.
While the ML2032 battery is slightly smaller in size, it is backwards compatible and will work with any TLS-450PLUS or TLS4 Series console and can still be ordered using part number 0330020-759.

Veeder-Root Technical Support Notification: Probe & Sensor Wiring

Probe & Sensor Wiring

Introduction

Veeder-Root has specific requirements for all Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG), probe, sensor and Pressurized Line Leak Detection (PLLD) transducer wiring – this is to maintain intrinsic safety as well as reduce electrical noise interference. This notification will provide a brief introduction into Veeder-Root’s probe and sensor wiring requirements. This should be used in conjunction with local, state and federal electrical codes.

Basic Wiring & Installation Requirements

The following are Veeder-Root’s field wiring requirements:

  • All probes and sensors must use two-wire shielded cable.*
  • Use a single continuous length of shielded cable with no splices to ensure optimum signal strength.
  • All shielded cable runs must be less than 1000 feet.
  • An epoxy pack must be used for all wiring splices in the field.
  • Weatherproof junction boxes are required for all conduit runs to the monitoring locations (e.g., STP sump or dispenser pan).
  • All shields must be grounded at the console, cut-off in the field.
  • When exiting the console, shielded cable must be run through rigid conduit.
  • Shielded cable should be rated between 14 to 18 AWG stranded copper wire and must be rated less than 100 picofarads per foot.**

* When installing a three-wire sensor, use a three-wire shielded cable.
** Refer to the TLS-450PLUS Site Prep and Installation Manual (577014-073) for wiring examples.

ATG Installation & Grounding

  • All three divider plates must be left in place in-between any of the four slots in the TLS-450PLUS console or the TLS-XB Expansion Box.
  • The divider plates and empty slot covers cannot be modified in any way. This includes drilling holes or cutting the plates.

Note: Removing or modifying the divider plate can lead to electrical noise interference issues and violates UL/cUL and other licensing bodies.

  • Four-conductor or more shielded cable cannot be used with Veeder-Root probes or sensors. Two wires cannot be connected to a sensor while the other two wires are connected to another device, even if the two devices are installed in the same sump.
  • Confirm the console has two isolated grounds.

To test the grounds, disconnect these two cables from the console. Place the leads of the ohmmeter on each grounding wiring and confirm it reads less than 1 ohm of resistance. If it reads more than 1 ohm of resistance, then the console has bad grounding, which could be a cause of an electrical noise interference issue.

Installation Review

This example shows a clean installation.

✅ One pair of two-conductor shielded cable is used per device.

✅ All shields are grounded at the console.

✅ All shielded cable is run through a rigid conduit.

This example shows an incorrect installation.

The field wiring does not meet Veeder-Root, UL/cUL and other licensing bodies’ wiring requirements. This site is using four-conductor shielded cable. (Shields are not shown).
As mentioned before, two-conductor shielded cable is required for all probes and sensors.

Veeder-Root: Technical Support Notification TLS-450PLUS – Divider Plates

TLS-450PLUS – Divider Plates

Introduction

The TLS-450PLUS console must be installed per the TLS-450PLUS Site Prep and Installation Manual (577014-073) and the UL/cUL Control Drawing – TLS-450/8600 Consoles (331940-008). The console may not be modified in any way.  This includes drilling holes, cutting the metal and plastic walls or removing the divider plates located in the module bay.  Removing or modifying the divider plates can lead to the product or installation not being compliant with UL/cUL requirements. All three divider plates must be left in place in-between any of the four slots in the TLS-450PLUS console or TLS-XB Expansion Box.

IMPORTANT: Removing the divider plates can lead to electrical noise interference issues and violates UL/cUL and other licensing bodies.

Designated knockouts are the only approved wiring openings. As needed, knockouts can be removed to allow rigid
conduit to be connected to the console. Any unused positions where knockouts have been removed must be properly sealed, per the latest National Electric Code.

Installation Review

This example shows a clean installation.
TLS450Plus Divider Plates CORRECT Install
All wires exit the console and immediately enter a rigid conduit (not shown).

✅ In addition, the console has not been altered in any way; unused knock-outs have been left in place and the divider plates have not been removed (each module is physically separated with a metal plate).

This example shows an incorrect installation.

Veeder-Root TLS450PLUS Divider Plates INCORRECT Install
❌ The divider plate was removed between the two USM modules, in slots 2 and 3. This is against Veeder-Root’s installation requirements and violates the UL/cUL and other licensing bodies. The divider plate must remain in place and cannot be modified.

❌ All wires must be run through rigid conduit and can only be used in the module slot that the conduit is connected to.

Technical Support Notification

TLS4 Series Security Settings

Overview

The TLS4 Series consoles come with security features allowing for greater protection and control of access to the Automatic Tank Gauge. Features such as configurable user access and segmented network ports help ensure both network and front-panel security.

This update covers:

  • User and Roles Admin
    • Create User Accounts
    • Custom Roles
  • System Security
    • Front Panel Security
    • Serial Command Port (TCP/IP Interface)
    • SSH Port
    • Serial Command Over SSH
    • HTTPS Port
    • User Admin Via Web
  • Router and Network Switch

User & Roles Admin

Create User Accounts & Custom RolesCreate User Accounts

All TLS4 Series consoles come preconfigured with three roles: Administrator, Operator and Regulator. Additional custom roles can be programmed.

Menu –> System Administration –> Roles Admin

Administrator: This role gives full access to the console – including the ability to create new roles and users.

Operator: This role allows the user to view and generate reports and perform certain manual functions, such as starting a manual line or tank test.

Regulator: This role allows the user to print and view console reports.

Note: Users assigned to the Regulator role cannot be deleted.

To add a Custom role, select Actions –> Add New Role

The Custom role allows each individual screen to be viewable, editable or not accessible. For example, in Setup under the Automatic Events section, each option can be customized:

Veeder-Root strongly recommends creating an Administrator account with a unique password. This will disable the default username and password.

Note: When using the Plus View or Remote View apps, the same login credentials are used.

Security

System SecuritySecurity Settings

The TLS4 Series consoles have optional security features to enhance protection in addition to front panel security that requires a username and password, when enabled.

Front Panel Security: When disabled, all users can access all screens with no password required. When enabled, users must login with a password to gain access to the screens they’re allowed to view.

Serial Command Port (TCP/IP Interface): When disabled, the console will not accept any serial commands sent through a telnet session.

Note: This will not block all traffic on the TCP/IP port. It will only block serial commands.

SSH Port: When disabled, all traffic on the SSH port will be blocked.

Serial Command Over SSH: For the SSH Public Keys feature to work, this port and the SSH port must be enabled. By default, this port is disabled.

HTTPS Port (Web Access): When disabled, all traffic on the HTTPS port will be blocked. This will prevent access to the web portal, and the Plus View and Remote View apps.

User Admin via Web: When disabled, the System Administration screens will be blocked from the web portal – access to these two screens will only be available on the console’s front panel.

Router or Network Switch

Most routers or network switches have additional features allowing ports to be enabled or disabled. Contact device manufacturers or internet service providers (ISPs) for more information.

3 Ways for Gas Stations to Expand their Customer Base

Gas stations mostly attract consumers due to convenience or cost-effective offerings. The most important factor of convenience for a vehicle owner is to find a gas station nearby. The majority of gas stations in any area only receive business from locals who live or work nearby. However, a gas station cannot earn significant profits when relying solely on the business from the locals. Certain strategies can help a gas station increase its reach, and here are a few of them.

1. Reward and Encourage Referrals

Word of mouth plays an important role when it comes to the expansion of any type of business. Any gas station with a loyal client base can earn more business by offering incentives for referrals. Most gas stations already reward their loyal customers via various customized services, but when these rewards are tied to referrals, they can increase your monthly revenue as well as client satisfaction. Once you choose a trustworthy gas station supplies provider, you can offer your customers the best products for the most affordable prices.

2. Improve Service Quality

Your customers are likely to recommend your business to others only if the services you provide meet their expectations. Keep a check on your regular customers and make sure you are always well-stocked with the products they visit your gas station for. When a customer feels recognized and appreciated, they are likely to give you repeat business and pass your name on to other friends and family members as well. Visit John W. Kennedy Company’s website and shop for all the service station supplies that your valuable customers are looking for.

Review, Opinion, Feedback, Stars, Evaluation, Survey

3. Request Google Reviews

If customers are satisfied with your service quality, they won’t hesitate to give you positive reviews online. Businesses can grow exponentially with a good online reputation and increase their profit in no time. Discounts and coupons can be offered for leaving a five-star review, which will help you attract customers from areas all around.John W. Kennedy Company is a petroleum equipment company that has been supplying hundreds of gas stations around the US with quality products and services since 1930. The company understands the needs of not only the gas stations but also its customer base and helps a business keep ahead of its competition.
