GVR Passport: Updates, Tips & Tricks!

Gilbarco Passport POS Soon to Support Fuel Prices Over $9.999

With the rising fuel prices, there have been some concerns about the ability to sell fuel at prices above $9.999 per unit. Gilbarco has heard these concerns and is addressing them by developing a feature within Passport POS to enable fuel prices above $9.999 per unit. We have received the suggestion to sell fuel at half-gallon or quarter-gallon increments; however, this is not allowed in most states as it tends to mislead consumers who have come to expect the displayed prices to be for whole gallons. So Gilbarco is working towards a more universally accepted solution that will keep whole-gallon units and allow a price $10 or higher.

The solution keeps a 4-digit price, but shifts the decimal place (i.e. $X.XXX becomes $XX.XX), enabling prices at $10 per unit or higher. As a consequence, fuel must be sold to the penny rather than to the tenth of a cent.

Implementation of this solution works as follows:

  • Changing to the two-decimal price format will be a toggle option within Passport’s Manager Workstation.
  • The format change must be applied to every fuel grade and every dispenser at the site. If the two-decimal format is selected, then all prices will be limited to two decimal places even if the price is below $10 per unit.
  • To comply with Weights & Measures, all dispenser price displays should be changed to reflect the two-decimal prices. Changing the price format on the dispenser must be done on the dispenser itself, it cannot be done through Passport. Depending on the dispenser hardware, a technician may be required to configure the dispenser price display.
    • On Gilbarco Veeder-Root dispensers, this change cannot be completed by the Insite360 Forecourt remote management tool.
  • To comply with Weights & Measures, all price signs should be changed to reflect the two-decimal prices. Most electronic price signs are not capable of receiving and displaying the two-decimal format. To avoid automatically pushing a price that will be incorrectly displayed on the price sign, Passport will revert to a manual price sign configuration when configured for a two-decimal price format.

Note, this feature is only necessary for sites selling fuel at $10 or more. Sites selling all fuel grades below $10 per unit will experience no change. This feature is planned to be released as a maintenance pack for Passport versions 21.02 and 21.03. Release is targeted for the end of September 2022, pending network approval.

Gilbarco Updates: CRIND Printer Update & EMV Myths Debunked

CRIND Printer Mounting Changed from Slide Mount to Hinged Door

Related Equipment:

  • Encore® 700S
  • Encore® S/ECIM

Details:

Effective with May 2021 production of Encore S & 700S, Gilbarco will be shipping the CRIND printer mounted on a bottom hinged printer door. The printer will no longer ship installed on its current slide mount inside the dispenser.

When the printer door is opened the printer will be readily accessible on the printer door. Please note, the printer, printer head and orientation have not changed. It is the same printer; only mounting method has changed.

Some configurations of Encore, such as units with upper bezel security door switches, will not immediately ship with this new printer arrangement. These will transition to the new design later in 2021.

6 Myths DEBUNKED About Outdoor EMV Upgrades

For those who haven’t upgraded, we hear a variety of reasons for the delay. Our expert EMV team is here to debunk the myths and spread the truth.

Myth #1: EMV is just too expensive and I can’t justify the cost.

The Facts: Upgrading a site to enable EMV is an investment in your store; but not upgrading to EMV technology could result in potential chargebacks that exceed $201K per site over the next 7 years.  This is much higher than the cost of upgrading a store to accept EMV at the pump.

Myth #2: I’ll wait until my site begins seeing chargebacks before I order equipment.

The Facts: On the surface this strategy sounds like it could make sense; but chargebacks typically take 30-45 days after the transaction occurs to show up on the store’s network reconciliation statement.  That means that once you notice the first chargebacks, there are 4-6 weeks of transactions that have already been processed and it’s likely that the number of chargebacks will grow.

Myth #3: My store isn’t in a major metro area, so I don’t need to worry about criminals using counterfeit magstripe cards.

The Facts: The data is clear on the point that countries that have completed a similar migration to EMV shows that the fraud migrates to stores that are not able to accept EMV chip cards – including those in rural areas. The criminals WILL find you.

Myth #4: EMV doesn’t really reduce counterfeit card fraud – so why upgrade?

The Facts: Merchants who completed their EMV chip acceptance upgrades saw a reduction in counterfeit fraud by 76% per Visa.
EMV chip acceptance upgrades

Myth #5: EMV technology can’t prevent credit cards from being stolen by criminals that install skimming devices in the dispenser.

The Facts: Technically this is correct – EMV on its own doesn’t detect or prevent skimming from occurring.  However, updating to newer payment electronics can provide additional benefits – such as local data encryption between the dispenser and Point of Sale.  So a skimmer device inside a dispenser is less likely to be able to obtain sensitive cardholder data, and that means fewer angry customers blaming your store for not securing their credit/debit card.

Myth #6: If I begin to see chargebacks, I can just turn off card acceptance at the pump and it won’t impact my business.

The Facts: By the standards of today’s consumers, this is not an option. Some customers prefer to pay with cash or come inside to pay for fuel; but a majority of consumers pay at the pump because it’s convenient.  This is why virtually every retail gas station today accepts card payment at the pump.  Most stores that turn off this functionality will see a business impact in terms of fewer customers and reduced revenues.

EMV DEADLINE DELAYED Until April 2021! But Retailers Advised To Stay On Schedule

EMV Delayed

EMV Deadline Moved To April 2021

Earlier this month, Visa and several other leading credit card issuers announced that they will delay the October 2020 EMV liability shift to April 17, 2021 due to complications caused by the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

In a May 4th article that appeared on convenience.org, it states Visa had initially declined NACS request to delay as it was still monitoring the situation. NACS had requested a new deadline be set after the crisis passed and market forces could be reevaluated but Visa moved forward with setting a new deadline of April 17, 2021.

The six-month cushion will benefit retailers in varying ways, some greater than others, depending on their progress towards EMV compliance. For those that have the ball rolling, the delay may eliminate their lapse in compliance, keeping their businesses safe from fraud chargebacks. Retailers that haven’t started will still experience a gap in fraud liability protection.

“Most Gilbarco distributors suggest placing orders sooner rather than later,” said Chris Whitley – Gilbarco Vice President, Sales and Marketing. “Getting on a distributor’s schedule now will help that retailer understand how much the new delay really benefits their business.”

Meanwhile—despite the recent announcement of the EMV deadline delay—many retailers are staying the course, despite the commercial disruption posed by COVID-19. Businesses that already put their EMV plans in motion are now seeing the fruits of their preparations – even during the pandemic.
