Gilbarco Updates: CRIND Printer Update & EMV Myths Debunked

CRIND Printer Mounting Changed from Slide Mount to Hinged Door

Related Equipment:

  • Encore® 700S
  • Encore® S/ECIM

Details:

Effective with May 2021 production of Encore S & 700S, Gilbarco will be shipping the CRIND printer mounted on a bottom hinged printer door. The printer will no longer ship installed on its current slide mount inside the dispenser.

When the printer door is opened the printer will be readily accessible on the printer door. Please note, the printer, printer head and orientation have not changed. It is the same printer; only mounting method has changed.

Some configurations of Encore, such as units with upper bezel security door switches, will not immediately ship with this new printer arrangement. These will transition to the new design later in 2021.

6 Myths DEBUNKED About Outdoor EMV Upgrades

For those who haven’t upgraded, we hear a variety of reasons for the delay. Our expert EMV team is here to debunk the myths and spread the truth.

Myth #1: EMV is just too expensive and I can’t justify the cost.

The Facts: Upgrading a site to enable EMV is an investment in your store; but not upgrading to EMV technology could result in potential chargebacks that exceed $201K per site over the next 7 years.  This is much higher than the cost of upgrading a store to accept EMV at the pump.

Myth #2: I’ll wait until my site begins seeing chargebacks before I order equipment.

The Facts: On the surface this strategy sounds like it could make sense; but chargebacks typically take 30-45 days after the transaction occurs to show up on the store’s network reconciliation statement.  That means that once you notice the first chargebacks, there are 4-6 weeks of transactions that have already been processed and it’s likely that the number of chargebacks will grow.

Myth #3: My store isn’t in a major metro area, so I don’t need to worry about criminals using counterfeit magstripe cards.

The Facts: The data is clear on the point that countries that have completed a similar migration to EMV shows that the fraud migrates to stores that are not able to accept EMV chip cards – including those in rural areas. The criminals WILL find you.

Myth #4: EMV doesn’t really reduce counterfeit card fraud – so why upgrade?

The Facts: Merchants who completed their EMV chip acceptance upgrades saw a reduction in counterfeit fraud by 76% per Visa.

Myth #5: EMV technology can’t prevent credit cards from being stolen by criminals that install skimming devices in the dispenser.

The Facts: Technically this is correct – EMV on its own doesn’t detect or prevent skimming from occurring.  However, updating to newer payment electronics can provide additional benefits – such as local data encryption between the dispenser and Point of Sale.  So a skimmer device inside a dispenser is less likely to be able to obtain sensitive cardholder data, and that means fewer angry customers blaming your store for not securing their credit/debit card.

Myth #6: If I begin to see chargebacks, I can just turn off card acceptance at the pump and it won’t impact my business.

The Facts: By the standards of today’s consumers, this is not an option. Some customers prefer to pay with cash or come inside to pay for fuel; but a majority of consumers pay at the pump because it’s convenient.  This is why virtually every retail gas station today accepts card payment at the pump.  Most stores that turn off this functionality will see a business impact in terms of fewer customers and reduced revenues.

“Think Beyond the Deadline”: 5 Tips for Retailers Navigating the New EMV Deadline

Gilbarco Veeder-Root

The following is a repost of the original June 16, 2020 article that appears on Gilbarco’s blog.Gilbarco Veeder-Root Encore 700 & Passport Edge

In the wake of the latest EMV deadline delay, the views of industry analysts are lining up.

The latest one echoes Chris Whitley, Gilbarco VP of Sales and Marketing: the pressure is still on.

Beyond tips or advice, retailers might also need consider the following warnings as well. Read the full article from CS News here.

Here are some of the pulled highlights:

1. Consider the Costs

“Based on recent reports from retailers, some major card processors are considering charging retainer fees of up to $50,000 to cover expected fraud liability for operators that do not upgrade by the deadline.”

2. Don’t Count on Additional Deadline Shifts

“Regardless of the final deadline date, retailers have a lot of progress to make and an inevitably limited timeframe. Proceeding promptly is the best course of action.”

3. Start Now

“Whether or not an operator expects to be ready by the current deadline, getting plans in motion now will save hassle and money in the long run.”

4. Turn to Experts for Help

Gilbarco has “created a certification to support their specific EMV programs, designating managed network services providers (MNSPs) that are familiar with deploying and servicing their EMV compliant hardware and software.”

5. Think Beyond the Deadline

“While meeting the EMV transition deadline may feel like a sprint to the finish line, upgrading POS security is just one aspect of network transformation that can help petroleum retailers thrive. View EMV transition as a beginning, not an end.”

The new outdoor EMV deadline will be April 17, 2021. If you haven’t begun your outdoor EMV upgrade, we strongly suggest contacting your local Gilbarco distributor as soon as possible.

You can find more information with Gilbarco Veeder-Root’s Quick EMV Migration Guide.

Upgrading to EMV? It’s Later Than You Think

The following article has been reproduced from the CStore Decisions article, Upgrading to EMV? It’s Later Than You Think, written by  that appeared online on

EMV Technologies

Panel experts warn that now is the time to start the long process of upgrading your pumps to EMV standards.

The EMV liability shift as it has come to be known as will take place on October 1, 2020. This deadline is when fuel retailers will have to install or upgrade their locations with the more secure chip card reader technology that uses cryptography to keep credit card information safe and prevent fraud.

This deadline will create a major liability shift from the card-issuing banks to pushing nearly all credit card fraud to retailers who do not upgrade their pumps to the new, more secure technology.

EMVCo
And for those not familiar with EMV, it’s an actual company, EMVCo. that stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. It was formed by those credit card issuing banks; American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay and Visa to address fraud prevention within the industry with the result being the chip card that most consumers have already been using inside the c-store and other retail environments.

And while the deadline has been extended once already, for those retailers undecided about whether to upgrade or not, it looms just over a year away!

Session panelist and Folk Oil Vice President Jim Linton warned those reluctant retailers it’s later than they think, warning that lead times for upgrading current dispensers could take as much as six months! Linton should know as Folk Oil has updated 100% of its pumps at all 35 of its multi-branded locations. He’s seen many of the things that can go wrong and delay the process.

Linda Toth, director of standards for non-profit c-store and petroleum market technology advocate Conexxus, said a study by her group found that 58% of retailers who have yet to upgrade believe they won’t make the liability shift deadline. And 25% said they have no idea when they’ll upgrade.

If you haven’t upgraded yet, your biggest question is: Is it worth it to upgrade?  We at the Kennedy Company agree with this panel’s findings; yes, it most certainly is! If you have the “wait and see” attitude, you will find it will be much tougher to get the necessary equipment and skilled technicians to perform the needed upgrades as we get closer to the deadline and AFTER the deadline, YOU – THE RETAILER will be responsible for pretty much all the fraud payback!

Also, the longer retailers wait, the more difficult and costly it will get to upgrade and if your reluctance to upgrade causes you to miss the deadline altogether, there is a very strong likelihood fraud payback charges will be far more costly than the upgrade itself!

If you haven’t upgraded your location(s) to EMV yet, looking to stay ahead in the game and would like to upgrade today, contact us at 1.800.451.4021.
