Dispenser Fuel Filters: Micron Ratings and Changing Frequency

Fuel filters are critical components of UST dispensing systems. They are designed to catch bacteria, debris and water that may be present in fuel products, ensuring clean supply of fuel to customers at gas pumps.

Dispenser Fuel Filters - Micron Ratings and Changing Frequency

This blog aims to discuss the main types of fuel filters available in the market, the type of fuel filter you should use at your gas station, and how often you should change your dispenser fuel filters.

Types of Fuel Filters

There are mainly two types of fuel filters available in the market: 10-micron and 30-micron.Micron rating of fuel filters basically denotes to the pore size of its filter material. A 10-micron fuel filter has a filter material that has a pore size of 10 microns. Likewise, a 30-micron filter has a filter material that has a pore size of 30 microns.

What does the pore size of the filter material signify?

It signifies the size of particles that can flow through the fuel filter. The larger the micron rating of the fuel filter, the larger the particles that can flow through it.

The Right Type of Fuel Filter for Your Gas Station

To choose the right type of fuel filter for your gas station, consider the type of fuel product you sell. Specifically speaking:

  • 10-micron filter is used for unleaded gasoline
  • 30-micron filter is used for diesel fuel

How Often You Should Change a Fuel Filter

In short, OFTEN!

It’s recommended to change fuel filters NO LESS than once a year.

Fuel filters get clogged with use. They must, therefore, be changed regularly to maintain proper fuel dispensing operation. They also break down internally overtime to the point where they no longer filter but just pass debris through.

Higher fuel output facilities will need to change fuel filters more frequently however.

Other factors that dictate the changing frequency of fuel filters include:

  • The presence of water in fuel dispensing systems
  • The quality of fuel product
  • Unacceptable / noticeable reduction in flow rate
