Upgrading to EMV? It’s Later Than You Think

The following article has been reproduced from the CStore Decisions article, Upgrading to EMV? It’s Later Than You Think, written by  that appeared online on

EMV Technologies

Panel experts warn that now is the time to start the long process of upgrading your pumps to EMV standards.

The EMV liability shift as it has come to be known as will take place on October 1, 2020. This deadline is when fuel retailers will have to install or upgrade their locations with the more secure chip card reader technology that uses cryptography to keep credit card information safe and prevent fraud.

This deadline will create a major liability shift from the card-issuing banks to pushing nearly all credit card fraud to retailers who do not upgrade their pumps to the new, more secure technology.

EMVCo
And for those not familiar with EMV, it’s an actual company, EMVCo. that stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. It was formed by those credit card issuing banks; American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay and Visa to address fraud prevention within the industry with the result being the chip card that most consumers have already been using inside the c-store and other retail environments.

And while the deadline has been extended once already, for those retailers undecided about whether to upgrade or not, it looms just over a year away!

Session panelist and Folk Oil Vice President Jim Linton warned those reluctant retailers it’s later than they think, warning that lead times for upgrading current dispensers could take as much as six months! Linton should know as Folk Oil has updated 100% of its pumps at all 35 of its multi-branded locations. He’s seen many of the things that can go wrong and delay the process.

Linda Toth, director of standards for non-profit c-store and petroleum market technology advocate Conexxus, said a study by her group found that 58% of retailers who have yet to upgrade believe they won’t make the liability shift deadline. And 25% said they have no idea when they’ll upgrade.

If you haven’t upgraded yet, your biggest question is: Is it worth it to upgrade?  We at the Kennedy Company agree with this panel’s findings; yes, it most certainly is! If you have the “wait and see” attitude, you will find it will be much tougher to get the necessary equipment and skilled technicians to perform the needed upgrades as we get closer to the deadline and AFTER the deadline, YOU – THE RETAILER will be responsible for pretty much all the fraud payback!

Also, the longer retailers wait, the more difficult and costly it will get to upgrade and if your reluctance to upgrade causes you to miss the deadline altogether, there is a very strong likelihood fraud payback charges will be far more costly than the upgrade itself!

If you haven’t upgraded your location(s) to EMV yet, looking to stay ahead in the game and would like to upgrade today, contact us at 1.800.451.4021.

NONMETALLIC PIPE IDENTIFICATION GUIDE January 2008

National Group On Leak Detection Evaluations
While we can not definitively say how or when we originally happened upon this, we do know that it came from the National Group On Leak Detection Evaluations and a great guide for general reference in order to identify various types of nonmetallic piping commonly found in UST systems.  They seem to be quite the dedicated independent group of state and federal employees whose full time job is to regulate storage tanks for their agency’s regulatory program.

The NWGLDE website is chock-full of resources including the January 2008 Nonmetallic Pipe Identification Guide.
Nonmetallic PipePlease note: Not all of the nonmetallic pipe systems that are or have been manufactured are included in this guide for several reasons but it sure is handy nonetheless!!

Do you have piping or other petroleum handling equipment questions or needs??

Verifone – VASC Field Service Bulletin: Secure Pump Pay & Smart Pump Access

VASC Field Service Bulletin

Verifone MX760 & MX700 Secure Pump PayOVERVIEW

Verifone announced in August 2014 that they entered an agreement with Gilbarco such that Gilbarco would become the integrator, distributor and service provider for all Verifone’s forecourt payment systems. Any pre-partnership commitments and agreements would continue to be honored in respect to Verifone’s Paymedia (Secure Pump Pay program).Verifone Smart Pump Access

During this time, Verifone’s new strategy with Gilbarco would be to continue to collaborate and engineer products sold under the Gilbarco sales channel. The current product is known as Flexpay IV and is exclusively available from Gilbarco for use with their model dispensers and retrofit kits.

Verifone stopped producing its Secure Pump Pay product line in July 2016 and existing inventory on- hand was used to fulfill existing contractual commitments. Beginning September 30th, 2019 only clients who are under existing contracts will receive support and repair from Verifone for their SPP devices. This includes the
Secure Pump Access (SPA) device.

Verifone’s mission is to deliver high-quality payment solutions based on powerful new technologies that lower your cost of ownership and enhance the efficiency of your operations. Verifone looks forward to helping you meet outdoor EMV and other increasingly complex regulatory, compliance and security requirements.

COMPLIANCE INFORMATION

Visa’s U.S. deadline for EMV for dispensers is currently set at October 1, 2020. Additionally, the Verifone SPP is certified either to the PCI 1.x or 2.x standard and both have now been succeeded by versions 3, 4, and 5. SPP PCI 1.x devices should be replaced as soon as feasible because of possible vulnerability based on the age of the device. These are primary reasons Verifone has been forced to phase out repair services for the SPP.

5 Reasons Fuel-Site Water Intrusion Is Increasing

It is a pretty well known fact that most of the Earth’s surface is covered by water so to say it permeates our existence is an understatement.

While this liquid is essential to our existence, it also wreaks havoc on many man-made systems it comes in contact with and in our world of petroleum, it would be classified as a super villain!

And while our industry has been reacting to the havoc water causes for more than a century to develop better ways to keep it out of refueling systems, water intrusion has INCREASED in refueling systems!

Ed KammererThe following is an excerpt, written by Ed Kammerer that appeared in the September, 2018 edition of the Fuel Market News.  Ed is the Director of Global Product Management for OPW, based in Cincinnati, OH, USA. From Tuthill Transfer Systems: Hurricane Florence Notification

Tuthill / Fill-Rite LogosThe following message has been reproduced from an email notification received from Tuthill at 10AM on 9/13/2018

“As residents and businesses throughout the Southeast prepare for the onslaught of Hurricane Florence, Tuthill Transfer Systems is focusing its attention on these customers. We have increased our manufacturing output and over the next 5 to 10 days we will prioritize service to those customers who are directly impacted by this storm. With this focus, we will be increasing our lead time on other order 2 to 4 days.
Our customer service team will work with channel partners on identifying and prioritizing existing and new orders to most efficiently serve this region. While we understand that this may inconvenience customers outside of the storm’s path, we believe without question that this is the most appropriate and necessary way to manage our service and dedication to customers.
We appreciate your support and please join us in keeping the Southeast in our thoughts in coming days.”
– Tuthill Transfer Systems –

We also invite you to review our 2 hurricane preparation blog posts from earlier this year with tips on how to prepare your location to minimize storm damage such as shrink wrapping your pumps and dispensers so any pump top signage, hoses and nozzles remain securely in place with minimal (hopefully, NO)  water ingress to your equipment :

The John W. Kennedy Company prays for everyone’s safety and well being in the region as the storm passes through!

A Friendly Reminder For Our Friends in California: Proposition 65 Warning

California and Prop65

Proposition 65, formally titled The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act was passed overwhelming by Californians in 1986 to allow them to make informed choices about their exposure to listed chemicals that may cause cancer and birth defects.

So with that said, several manufacturers have already started placing warnings on those products that contain any of the chemicals listed while others are placing the warning on every product regardless of its chemical composition (a very CYA move and why not in this day and age of constant litigation!).

This process of placing a notice at the product level started after the launch of our eCommerce site when we already had thousands of products listed.  You can see a product detail page from our web store below that shows where you may find the Prop65 Warning:

JWK Prop65 Product Level WarningSo we could get this notice listed quickly on all products, we have a mechanism in our system to provide a link to the CA Prop65 Warning website under the Resources tab towards the bottom of all product detail pages on the johnwkennedyco.com website. We will continue to add the actual warning to product detail pages when that information is made apparent by the manufacturers as to which exact products they sell that fall under Prop65.

Please feel free to visit the CA Prop65 Warning website to learn more about the law and more importantly, which chemicals are listed that could affect you and your family!
