Veeder-Root TSN: Network Security Reminder

Veeder-Root Takes Network Security VERY Seriously!

OVERVIEW

Offering the best in class tools to prevent cyberattacks, Veeder-Root Veeder-Root TLS-450PLUSrecommends network ‘best practices’ such as:

  • Utilize separate network ports on the TLS-450PLUS ATG
  • Configure network routing tables
  • Changing network port numbers
  • Add a serial command security code to harden remote access and prevent un-authorized access to Veeder-Root ATG

TIP: Veeder-Root recommends that ASCs review and implement these ‘best practices’ for network security with their customers, when installing a new console or setting up a network port.

IMPORTANTCustomers on older TLS-350 ATG systems should consider either upgrading to the TLS-450PLUS or utilizing extra network firewall equipment.

TLS-450PLUS and TLS4 Series ATGs

The TLS-450PLUS and TLS4 Series ATGs come with security features allowing for greater protection and control of access to the ATG than legacy consoles. Features such as configurable user access and segmented network ports help ensure both network and front-panel security. To learn more about these features and how to set them up, please see our TLS4 Series Security Settings Technical Support Notice.

Veeder-Root Technical Support Notification: Probe & Sensor Wiring

Probe & Sensor Wiring

Introduction

Veeder-Root has specific requirements for all Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG), probe, sensor and Pressurized Line Leak Detection (PLLD) transducer wiring – this is to maintain intrinsic safety as well as reduce electrical noise interference. This notification will provide a brief introduction into Veeder-Root’s probe and sensor wiring requirements. This should be used in conjunction with local, state and federal electrical codes.

Basic Wiring & Installation Requirements

The following are Veeder-Root’s field wiring requirements:

  • All probes and sensors must use two-wire shielded cable.*
  • Use a single continuous length of shielded cable with no splices to ensure optimum signal strength.
  • All shielded cable runs must be less than 1000 feet.
  • An epoxy pack must be used for all wiring splices in the field.
  • Weatherproof junction boxes are required for all conduit runs to the monitoring locations (e.g., STP sump or dispenser pan).
  • All shields must be grounded at the console, cut-off in the field.
  • When exiting the console, shielded cable must be run through rigid conduit.
  • Shielded cable should be rated between 14 to 18 AWG stranded copper wire and must be rated less than 100 picofarads per foot.**

* When installing a three-wire sensor, use a three-wire shielded cable.
** Refer to the TLS-450PLUS Site Prep and Installation Manual (577014-073) for wiring examples.

ATG Installation & Grounding

  • All three divider plates must be left in place in-between any of the four slots in the TLS-450PLUS console or the TLS-XB Expansion Box.
  • The divider plates and empty slot covers cannot be modified in any way. This includes drilling holes or cutting the plates.

Note: Removing or modifying the divider plate can lead to electrical noise interference issues and violates UL/cUL and other licensing bodies.

  • Four-conductor or more shielded cable cannot be used with Veeder-Root probes or sensors. Two wires cannot be connected to a sensor while the other two wires are connected to another device, even if the two devices are installed in the same sump.
  • Confirm the console has two isolated grounds.

To test the grounds, disconnect these two cables from the console. Place the leads of the ohmmeter on each grounding wiring and confirm it reads less than 1 ohm of resistance. If it reads more than 1 ohm of resistance, then the console has bad grounding, which could be a cause of an electrical noise interference issue.

Installation Review

This example shows a clean installation.

✅ One pair of two-conductor shielded cable is used per device.

✅ All shields are grounded at the console.

✅ All shielded cable is run through a rigid conduit.

This example shows an incorrect installation.

The field wiring does not meet Veeder-Root, UL/cUL and other licensing bodies’ wiring requirements. This site is using four-conductor shielded cable. (Shields are not shown).
As mentioned before, two-conductor shielded cable is required for all probes and sensors.

Veeder-Root: Technical Support Notification TLS-450PLUS – Divider Plates

TLS-450PLUS – Divider Plates

Introduction

The TLS-450PLUS console must be installed per the TLS-450PLUS Site Prep and Installation Manual (577014-073) and the UL/cUL Control Drawing – TLS-450/8600 Consoles (331940-008). The console may not be modified in any way.  This includes drilling holes, cutting the metal and plastic walls or removing the divider plates located in the module bay.  Removing or modifying the divider plates can lead to the product or installation not being compliant with UL/cUL requirements. All three divider plates must be left in place in-between any of the four slots in the TLS-450PLUS console or TLS-XB Expansion Box.

IMPORTANT: Removing the divider plates can lead to electrical noise interference issues and violates UL/cUL and other licensing bodies.

Designated knockouts are the only approved wiring openings. As needed, knockouts can be removed to allow rigid
conduit to be connected to the console. Any unused positions where knockouts have been removed must be properly sealed, per the latest National Electric Code.

Installation Review

This example shows a clean installation.
TLS450Plus Divider Plates CORRECT Install
All wires exit the console and immediately enter a rigid conduit (not shown).

✅ In addition, the console has not been altered in any way; unused knock-outs have been left in place and the divider plates have not been removed (each module is physically separated with a metal plate).

This example shows an incorrect installation.

Veeder-Root TLS450PLUS Divider Plates INCORRECT Install
❌ The divider plate was removed between the two USM modules, in slots 2 and 3. This is against Veeder-Root’s installation requirements and violates the UL/cUL and other licensing bodies. The divider plate must remain in place and cannot be modified.

❌ All wires must be run through rigid conduit and can only be used in the module slot that the conduit is connected to.

Top 4 New Year’s Resolutions for C-Store Owners in 2022

Gilbarco Veeder-Root Top 4 New Year's Resolutions for C-Store Owners in 2022 We are almost one month into 2022… have you made a plan to achieve your goals?

If not, here’s a refresher on what you should be doing this year:

According to a study, 64% of us will apparently abandon our New Year’s resolutions within a month, so we thought we’d share some new ideas to replace the ones you didn’t quite keep up with.

Here are some resolutions that fuel and convenience retailers need to add to their list for 2022.

NEXT-LEVEL CX

Take your customer experience to the next level this year. The modern customer experience demands a frictionless shopping experience from fill-up to checkout. Here are three ways to up your CX game:

1. Whether you need help with staffing or long lines, Passport® Express Lane™ is one of the most cost-effective solutions to optimize your operations. Committing to a self-checkout strategy is the first step in creating next-level CX. Express Lane gives everyone, including managers, employees, and customers – more flexibility.

2. Express Ordering is another smart solution that helps c-stores set themselves apart with fresh food options. By automating the ordering process, Express Ordering puts the consumer in control – driving increased loyalty and upsell opportunities.

3. Every store’s customer data needs to be secure. Passport POS and Encore® 700 S fuel dispensers come EMV-ready and PCI-certified out of the box to ensure your customers’ private information stays secure.

DEFinite ADVANTAGE

Demand for diesel exhaust fluid is rising. The percentage of DEF pumps in the overall automotive DEF supply mode increased from 14% in 2011 to 40% in 2019, according to market research firm Reportlinker.

This is due to more stringent environmental regulations and the manufacturing of new DEF-compatible vehicles that are replacing the old ones.

For retailers with Gilbarco’s Encore S fuel dispensers or later, the DEF equipment cabinet(s) can be added left or right oriented or on either side of the fueling position, allowing for even more convenience and create loyalty with your diesel customer base.

COMBAT CORROSION

Now is the perfect time to commit to quality fuel. Part of that commitment means protecting your underground storage tanks.

The Veeder-Root HydrX Fuel Conditioning System combats in-tank corrosion by providing continuous water removal within diesel underground storage tanks. The system’s unique design removes water from the lowest point in the tank, preventing water from stagnating on the tank bottom and breeding microbial contaminants. The integrated filtration removes entrained water, rust, sand, and microbial particulate from the fuel, polishing it before returning clean fuel back to the tank.

Learn how the HydrX Fuel Conditioning System prevents corrosion from eating away at the bottom line for Cumberland Farms.

LEVEL UP YOUR ATG

And finally, resolve to upgrade your automatic tank gauge to the industry’s latest, most reliable ATG equipment with the TLS-450PLUS and Central Device Management (CDM).

The TLS-450PLUS console provides an expanded, advanced feature set at a lower price point than the TLS-350 console without needing to replace your probes or sensors. It also unlocks compatibility with other solutions like HydrX.

CDM is a server-based software package to manage your entire network of sites, ensuring your ATG consoles are always up to date with the latest features and security updates.

THE BOTTOM LINE

For 2022 and beyond, focus on solutions that make your operations more frictionless, efficient, secure, and connected.

Whether it’s on the forecourt, underneath it, or in the cloud, Gilbarco Veeder-Root is the only solutions provider that covers every area of your fuel and convenience business. As your partner for what’s next, let’s see if we can help you beat the stats and keep your new year’s resolution.

Behind the scenes of filling up: How do operators keep track of their fuel inventory?

This is Veeder-Root’s fifth article in their series on what actually happens when you fill up at a gas station. Read the others here:
Behind the Scenes of Filling Up:
1. How Does it Work?
2. Gaining Approval and Getting Started
3. How does the fuel actually get to the nozzle?
4. How do gas stations ensure fuel isn’t leaking?
.

Keeping track of all that fuel

Veeder-Root

When you fill up at a gas station, it’s likely that you’re one of many people getting gas at the same time.

At busy gas stations and c-stores there are multiple transactions happening at one time. In fact, the average c-store dispenses just over 4,000 gallons of fuel per day!

With all that fuel pumping out of the storage tank, how does the site operator maintain an understanding of the current inventory, how much has been sold that day, and the amount of inventory that they started with? This basic information is what they will need for inventory reconciliation, which is the process of making sure that they can account for all the fuel that has been dispensed.

If there is a difference between the amount of fuel that records say are in the storage tank and the actual amount of fuel in the tank, then there is a fuel variance. There are two likely scenarios for the loss, either there is an adjusted loss or an actual physical loss of the fuel.

Adjusted losses accrue when key records of fuel transfer don’t match up. It’s common when the bills of lading, delivery confirmations, automatic tank gauges, and point-of-sale equipment may all supply a different record of the transaction. Contributing to the issue are tank charting and equipment errors, which can mask any actual fuel losses.

Physical loss might happen if there was a leak that went undetected, a meter drift, theft or delivery discrepancy, or even a change in temperature that causes fuel contraction or expansion in the tank.

What Can We Do About it?

The first step is to confirm that the equipment at your gas station is maintained and operating correctly. You then want to ensure that you have accurate tank charts for your site. The next step is to implement a daily reconciliation and variance tracking method.

C-Store owners should also take advantage of remote connectivity options that allow them to check on their inventory and site status from anywhere.

Automating The Process

The most accurate way to generate a tank chart is to use AccuChart on your Veeder-Root TLS Automatic Tank Gauge. This application takes frequent measurements and reports back when there is a statistically significant data set for creating an accurate tank chart.

Once you have an accurate tank chart, an application like Business Inventory Reconciliation (BIR) can automatically calculate fuel variance.

BIR tracks all the fuel that enters or exits each of your underground tanks, accounting for all delivery and dispensing activity. It automatically collects metered sales information from electronic and mechanical dispensers and generates accurate delivery and reconciliation reports.

This is our final installment in our blog series on what actually happens when you fill up at a gas station. You can find more information on every step of the process here
