GVR Passport: Updates, Tips & Tricks!

Gilbarco Passport POS Soon to Support Fuel Prices Over $9.999

With the rising fuel prices, there have been some concerns about the ability to sell fuel at prices above $9.999 per unit. Gilbarco has heard these concerns and is addressing them by developing a feature within Passport POS to enable fuel prices above $9.999 per unit. We have received the suggestion to sell fuel at half-gallon or quarter-gallon increments; however, this is not allowed in most states as it tends to mislead consumers who have come to expect the displayed prices to be for whole gallons. So Gilbarco is working towards a more universally accepted solution that will keep whole-gallon units and allow a price $10 or higher.

The solution keeps a 4-digit price, but shifts the decimal place (i.e. $X.XXX becomes $XX.XX), enabling prices at $10 per unit or higher. As a consequence, fuel must be sold to the penny rather than to the tenth of a cent.

Implementation of this solution works as follows:

  • Changing to the two-decimal price format will be a toggle option within Passport’s Manager Workstation.
  • The format change must be applied to every fuel grade and every dispenser at the site. If the two-decimal format is selected, then all prices will be limited to two decimal places even if the price is below $10 per unit.
  • To comply with Weights & Measures, all dispenser price displays should be changed to reflect the two-decimal prices. Changing the price format on the dispenser must be done on the dispenser itself, it cannot be done through Passport. Depending on the dispenser hardware, a technician may be required to configure the dispenser price display.
    • On Gilbarco Veeder-Root dispensers, this change cannot be completed by the Insite360 Forecourt remote management tool.
  • To comply with Weights & Measures, all price signs should be changed to reflect the two-decimal prices. Most electronic price signs are not capable of receiving and displaying the two-decimal format. To avoid automatically pushing a price that will be incorrectly displayed on the price sign, Passport will revert to a manual price sign configuration when configured for a two-decimal price format.

Note, this feature is only necessary for sites selling fuel at $10 or more. Sites selling all fuel grades below $10 per unit will experience no change. This feature is planned to be released as a maintenance pack for Passport versions 21.02 and 21.03. Release is targeted for the end of September 2022, pending network approval.

Fuel Variance W H I T E P A P E R

Hidden Costs, Hidden Causes and What to Do About Them

Something isn’t adding up, and you may not even know it. Due to a variety of factors, the amount of fuel you receive and the amount you dispense to consumers may not be the same. This difference is called fuel variance — the difference between the recorded and actual amounts of fuel in your tanks at a given time. Physical fuel losses caused by theft or leaks are readily understood and accounted for. But there are hidden causes that are difficult to detect and equally challenging to manage. For many retailers, these less obvious causes aren’t high on their list of concerns. But the effort to learn why they occur might just be worth it when it comes to their bottom lines.

Danny Seals Product Marketing Manager, Retail Dispensers, Gilbarco Veeder-RootDanny Seals, Product Marketing Manager, Retail Dispensers, Gilbarco Veeder-Root goes through the costs, causes and what to do to address fuel variance. The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Gas Station POS Systems

The point-of-sale system is the heart of your enterprise; that’s where purchases, inventory tracking, invoice verification, and customer strategic planning all come together.

This blog is for you if you’re new to the service station industry and want to learn more about some of the main critical systems (particularly the POS system) that help with service station management. Take a look at this guide to understand why a POS system is essential for your gas station to increase productivity and profitability.

Understanding The Concept Of POS System

POS systems are similar to checkout counters. However, they are computer-based and allow simple access to all of your convenient shop or fuel station records. POS technology can benefit your company in a variety of ways. This is how.

Your executives and staff can gain valuable insights into consumer preferences using POS systems. Your staff no longer needs to remember the rates and product specifications. Furthermore, a POS system uses a thumbnail image to show all of the products in your store, which consumers may pick and add to their baskets.

What Is The Function Of a POS System?

Your business can collect cash from consumers and maintain sales records with POS technology. It appears simple, yet based on whether you operate digitally or have a physical shop, the system can operate in various methods.

The cash machine in a shop is referred to as a point-of-sale device. The latest POS solutions are computerized, allowing you to check out a consumer from anywhere. All you require is a POS application and a gadget that can connect to the internet, like a smartphone or computer.

Various operational, financial, and advertising abilities are required to run a gas station. These abilities are required for your business to run successfully, from ensuring sufficient stock to compiling quarterly sales statistics. Having a well-functioning POS technology can be beneficial in ensuring that all of your processes run smoothly and maximize profits.

Brief History of Gas Stations

While it is true that improving a service station takes effort and expense, it is also true that strategy implementation will assist you in making your mark in the industry. But how were gas stations made? Who was the pioneer of gas stations?

We have compiled a guide to help you discover the origins of gas stations. Take a look at this guide to understand the historical background of gas stations.

The Origin

The inaugural drive-in gas station debuted in Pennsylvania in 1913. Since 1905, vehicles in the United States were authorized to fill their fuel at gas stations, but these were merely roadside setups. Traditionally, drivers purchased fuel in containers from pharmacists and blacksmith stores and filled their tanks. In Pittsburgh, a historical landmark was formed with the inauguration of this gas station on St. Clair Street.

20th Century Trends

Bowser’s idea ushered in a new type of ‘gas station’ industry. Petroleum was supplied directly on the curbside, resulting in traffic bottlenecks. Even earlier gas stations depended on roadside pumps. By 1910, when there were half a million cars on American roadways, this trend became an issue. The answer was the drive-in service stations, which helped usher in a successful period for American automobiles.

In its first week, it supplied 30 gallons of fuel for twenty-seven cents per gallon, and drive-in gas stations proliferated almost as quickly as the automotive industry.  As newly formed oil businesses competed for market dominance, the 1911 breakdown of the Standard Oil cartel spurred innovation and gas station expansion.

There was originally minimal necessity for other automobile solutions, as Ford’s cars were built for uncomplicated user upkeep. Each Ford was equipped with an “oil cup” so the motorist could maintain their vehicle. Nevertheless, as GM started to overtake Ford in popularity, gas station owners started to build “greasing stations.” In 1926, Sinclair established the initial three outlets with lubricating machinery.

The drive-in gas station sector was about to face a drastic upheaval, irrespective of design or use, with the introduction of self-service outlets. When Frank Ulrich launched a self-service gas station in 1947, the greatest danger to the career progression of gas station personnel emerged.

Thanks to technological advancement, manufacturers have introduced new solutions and products to help gas station owners optimize their business.

JWK Web Store No Longer to Support Internet Explorer

Microsoft To End Support of Internet
Explorer 11 on June 15, 2022
RIP Internet Explorer

We received notification from our eCommerce provider that when Microsoft ends their support of Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, they in turn will follow suit by ending support for Internet Explorer on June 23, 2022. That does not mean that Internet Explorer will stop working; it just means the browser will no longer be supported in the event you encounter any issues while using Internet Explorer.

Microsoft is saying that most sites will continue on without interruption using their Microsoft Edge. If there are incompatible sites, Edge does allow for an Internet Explorer compatibility.

This is directly from the Microsoft site:

“Over the last year, you may have noticed our movement away from Internet Explorer (“IE”) support, such as an announcement of the end of IE support by Microsoft 365 online services (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-365-blog/microsoft-365-apps-say-farewell-to-internet-explorer-11-and/ba-p/1591666) . Today, we are at the next stage of that journey: we are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications. Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge. With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.”

We’ll let you decide what works best for you and your organization.  We do not get many calls of people having browser compatibility issues.  Our eCommerce provider is recommending people switch to Google Chrome.  At this time, Chrome is the number one browser used by customers visiting our site but not the only one.

Here are the top 5 browsers used by those visiting our site in 2022 so far:
1. Chrome: 65%
2. Safari: 18%
3. Edge: 9%
4. Firefox: 5%
5. Samsung Internet: 1%
